Why knock fiber in Portage?
Portage is mostly single-family: 69.1% of housing units are single-family detached and 69.1% of occupied homes are owner-occupied (ACS 2020–2024). The City's 2045 Master Plan describes 1960s ranch homes in the north, 1980s and 1990s two-story homes in curvilinear subdivisions in the south and west, and larger homes around the lakes, including Austin, West and Hampton. City code bars soliciting and canvassing between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.
Portage counted 48,891 residents at the 2020 Census and 49,975 by the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate, on about 32.2 square miles of land in Kalamazoo County, and the City reports that about 73 percent of its land is zoned for residential use. Its financial report for the year ended June 30, 2025 ranks Stryker Instruments first among employers in the city (3,500 employees) and Pfizer second (3,000), with Portage Public Schools at 1,400. Of 21,881 housing units, 69.1% are single-family detached and 69.1% of occupied homes are owner-occupied; 1.5% were built in 2020 or later and 7.1% from 2010 to 2019 (ACS 2020–2024). For a recruiter, that means a labor pool anchored by medical-device, pharmaceutical and school jobs.
