Westland covers 20.4 square miles of land, and only 58 percent of its 38,299 housing units are detached houses. About 18 percent sit in buildings of ten or more units, so a route here alternates between single-family streets built mostly in the 1950s through 1970s and apartment complexes, where the approach to each building differs. The city's named parks, from Hubbard Park to Tattan Park, give a walk fixed reference points.
The 2020 Census counted 85,420 people in Westland, and the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate is 82,745. Wayne County's community profile says residents voted on May 16, 1966, to turn the remainder of Nankin Township into the City of Westland, and dates the Westland Shopping Center to 1965; it also places John Glenn High School and the William D. Ford Career Tech Center in the city. ACS 2020–2024 estimates count 61 percent of occupied homes as owner-occupied.
